What is Insulation testing?

When we pass a current through any circuit the result obtained at the output is not meet the expected criteria because wires are insulated with the resistance sheathing which escape some of the current. To overcome this, it is necessary to perform insulation testing.

As we know, insulation testing is just like a pressure checking a plumbing system. For this, we use a relatively high dc voltage to make leakage current more apparent. In a plumbing system, you can easily find out the leaks by passing the water with a high pressure through a passage because increased pressure makes the leaks easier to spot while in Insulation testing we supply high voltage and current in a limited amount. This will prevent damage to the system with failing insulation and keeps the operator away from receiving dangerous current levels from accidental contact. By doing insulation testing with Fluke 1587 insulation multimeter, you will find leakage very instantly without any damage to the user under controlled conditions.

Low pass filter in Fluke 1587 insulation multimeter

Fluke 1587 insulation multimeter uses low-pass filter to improve the measurement performance on composite sine waves that are typically generated by inverters and variable frequency motor drives. While measuring ac voltage or ac frequency you can activate low pass filter by pressing blue coloured LO labelled button. With the help of this filter, multimeter blocks all the unwanted frequencies above 800 Hz and passes all the frequencies below 800 Hz.

Note: Auto-ranging is not available with the low pass filter function. You have to select ranges by pressing the range labelled button because while using low pass filter function, the meter goes to the manual mode.

Warning: Do not use the Low pass filter function to verify the presence of hazardous voltages to avoid possible electric shock or personnel injury.
