How to measure AC & DC voltage with a Fluke 117 electrician digital multimeter?

Steps for measuring Ac & Dc voltage are:

  • Point the dial to ṽ or mṽ for ac and  for Dc voltage.
  • Set the meter to measure ac or dc volt.
  • Inside the com jack insert black lead.
  • Inside the VΩ jack insert Red lead.
  •  Firstly connect the black lead to the circuit and after that the Red lead.
  • Set the three ranges available from 6.000V to 600.0V.
  • Set the basic accuracy of 1.0% + 3 digits, 2.0 % + 3 digits for Ac and +/- 0.5% + 2 digits for Dc voltage measurement.
  • Set the maximum resolution of 0.001V for DC voltage.
  • Measure alternating voltage and direct voltage. On the left side of the display, it indicates either AC or DC voltage.
  • Press  button for frequency measurement.

Note the measurement display on the screen. When you have noted down the reading, first remove the red lead from the circuit and after that remove the black lead.

How to measure Resistance with Fluke 117 Electricians Digital Multimeter?

Steps for measuring Resistances are:

  • Point the dial to Ω.
  • Inside the com jack insert black lead.
  • Inside the VΩ jack insert Red lead.
  • Connect firstly black lead to the circuit and after that Red lead.
  • Set the six ranges available i.e. 600.0 Ω,6.000 k Ω, 60.00 k Ω,600.0 k Ω, 6.000 M Ω and 40.00M Ω.
  • Set the basic accuracy of +/-0.9% + 1 digit.
  • Set the maximum resolution of 0.1 Ω in the 600.0 Ω range.
  • Note the measurement display on the screen. When reading is noted down removes firstly red lead from the circuit and after removing black lead.

Measure capacitance & perform diode test with Fluke 117 Digital Multimeter?

Steps for measuring capacitances & performing Diode test are:

  • Point the dial to .
  • Inside the com jack insert black lead.
  • Inside the VΩ jack insert Red lead.
  • Connect firstly black lead to the circuit and after that Red lead.
  • Press  button for capacitance measurement.
  • Note the measurement display on the screen. When reading is noted down removes firstly red lead from the circuit and after removing black lead.

Before pressing  button, you can perform a Diode test by sending a current through semiconductor junction and measures the junction voltage drop.

In a diode test, the beeper is active & it beeps normally for a forward biased junction.

How to measure Ac & Dc current with Fluke 117 Electricians Digital Multimeter?

Steps for measuring Ac & Dc current are:

  • Point the dial to  for ac current and to for dc current measurement.
  • Inside the com jack insert black lead.
  • Inside the A jack insert Red lead.
  • Connect firstly black lead to the circuit and after that Red lead.
  • Set the two ranges available from 6.00A to 10.00A for both ac & dc.
  • Set the basic accuracy up to +/-1.5% + 3 digits for Ac current and +/- 01.0% + 3 digits for Dc current.
  • Set the maximum resolution of 0.001 A for both Ac & Dc current.
  • Before pressing  button, measure ac current and after pressing this button measure frequency.
  • Note the measurement display on the screen. When reading is noted down removes firstly red lead from the circuit and after removing black lead.

How to perform a continuity test with Fluke 117 Electrician Digital Multimeter?

  • Point the dial to
  • Inside the com jack insert black lead.
  • Inside the VΩ jack insert Red lead.
  • Connect firstly the black lead to the circuit and after that the Red lead.
  • Set one range available i.e. 600.0 Ω.
  • Maximum resolution is of 1Ω.
  • When meter measures the resistance less than 20 Ω, the meter will sound the beeper.
  • Uses an audible signal to indicate the shorts.
  • The meter detects the intermittent open and short lasting as little as 250 µs.
  • It is useful for checking the integrity of switches or contactors for closure, connections or circuit paths.
